Kathy and Tommy begin a sexual relationship
Never Let Me GoKathy H. and Tommy begin a sexual relationship during the period when she is caring for him at the Kingsfield recovery centre. Their intimacy marks a change in a bond shaped by years of friendship and separation: they are happy to be together, yet the closeness also makes the time they lost, and the limited future ahead, harder to ignore.
Circumstances at Kingsfield
Three days after Ruth’s second donation, Kathy visits her in hospital. Ruth is gravely ill, and in a brief moment of recognition Kathy understands what she wants: Kathy promises to become Tommy’s carer as soon as she can. At the Kingsfield, Tommy is recovering from his third donation. His room has a high, frosted window and a small school desk; Kathy visits after lunch, reads to him, and talks with him. The ease between them makes it seem, for a while, as if the years have melted away.
That calm does not mean their relationship is simply returning to what it once was. Kathy is conscious that they are starting again as a couple, and she considers whether physical intimacy might matter if they pursued the deferral Ruth had hoped for. She worries that never having been sexually intimate could make their closeness appear incomplete. The concern is hers, rather than a stated requirement of any deferral process, and it informs how she chooses to approach Tommy.
Beginning the Relationship
Kathy initiates their first intimate encounter gently, giving Tommy room to accept or decline. He is recovering, and she does not want to pressure him. The first experience is tentative; in the days that follow, they begin having sex more fully and are happy about the change in their relationship. The account presents this as a mutual opening after years of knowing one another without this kind of closeness, not as a sudden resolution of everything between them.
Even from the beginning, however, happiness is accompanied by sadness. Kathy senses that Tommy is glad they are together while also regretting how late they have reached this point. As their intimacy develops, she tries to keep that feeling at bay by concentrating on their present closeness, but it persists. Their relationship therefore carries two truths at once: they can be happy together now, and they cannot recover the years in which this possibility remained unrealized.
Intimacy Under the Shadow of Donation
The relationship deepens within a life still organized by donation and recovery. The deferral possibility gives their intimacy an additional pressure: Kathy wonders whether the bond between them will be legible as a genuine couple’s relationship, even though the evidence does not establish sexual intimacy as an official condition. Their private closeness cannot remove the larger uncertainty governing their future.
That uncertainty surfaces later when Tommy receives notice of his fourth donation. He and Kathy discuss how donors respond to the prospect, including the fear that completion may not mean a definite end to donations. Kathy dismisses his concern, but recognizes that she has no evidence to reassure him; their exchange shows a later intimacy in which fear can be confided, even when it cannot be answered. Their relationship also remains entangled with Kathy’s role as carer. Tommy asks whether she ever wishes she would be sent her own notice, exposing the distance between her continuing work and the donor life he and Ruth have already entered. The sexual relationship begins in a period of tenderness, but tenderness does not make that difference—or the approaching end of their time together—disappear.
